1. The Red Gym
The Red Gym today is the home to many administrative offices including the International Students Service (ISS), Undergraduate Admission Office, and many multicultural organizations of UW.
Constructed in the May of 1894, Red Gym has now become one of the oldest building in UW campus. This building have been a great contributor to the development of UW over the past 116 years. Strategically located next to Lake Mendota, it had been constantly transformed into different types of establishment, internally, to fully utilize its function.
It had evolved from being a ballroom into a assembly hall and into a gymnasium -- which includes a swimming pool and a basketball court. The famous UW fight song, "On, Wisconsin", was first sung in this very building during the 1909 basketball championship game against University of Minnesota.
Before the Red Gym was made into the centre of sports activities, it was a military training facility. Some of the rooms was made into artillery drill room and the gun room. What was more exciting is that the Red Gym used to have a bowling alley down in the basement - but sadly it only lasted less than a decade.
It is amazing how a single building had transformed so much to serve this fine educational institution.
2. Memorial Union
The Memorial Union is referred to as "The Heart and Soul of UW". The concept behind this 103 years old establishment is to provide every badger with the full UW Experience -- of which includes learning outside of the classroom.
The Memorial Union had successfully blended study and leisure atmosphere, providing recreational, cultural, educational, and social activities to the students and staff. The building comprises of several awesome features including the Union Theater, Union Terrace, boat house, docks, ballrooms, reading lounges, art gallery, lakefront view cafe, and salon.
Personally, I always perceive MU as movie sets. Two of the ballrooms resembles that of Harry Potter's and Anastasia's. The super classy reading lounge looks like something coming out of Beauty and the Beast's animated movie. And finally, the salon is somewhat the cross between Harry Potter dining hall and the dark, gloomy salon you see in Pirate of the Caribbean. And they have a round stage in the middle of the salon where bands come and play on weekend nights.
Apart from that, MU offers many interesting mini courses open to everyone. Among the classes I found there are salsa dance, pottery, judo, and Monaco dishes. The MU is also home to the Hoofers, an outdoor recreational club which offers activities such as sailing, windsurfing, scuba diving, snowboarding, mountaineering, lake skating and riding to its member. The MU is definitely the activity hub of UW.
And oh, the MU is also known to be one of the best place to get a cone of ice cream in campus! Located next to Red Gym along Mendota shore, is the perfect mini getaway be it in the middle of a busy semester or during a nice summer break.
During its opening ceremony, University President described Memorial Union as “a living room, which converts the University from a house of learning into a home of learning."
3. Bascom Hill
Bascom Hill is one of the monumental landmark of UW campus.
Sitting on top of the hill, the statue is the only replica of Abraham Lincoln statue, which was originally casted by Adolph Alexander Weinman. Scattered all across the slope are the 12 bronze plaque that narrates the early history of UW. The early decades of UW was most taken place on this very hill. The hill hosts several academic hall including the Bascom Hall..
Bascom Hill is also very unique in the way that it is being utilize. Over the year, it had become the stage for thousands of activist activities held by student. Throughout a semester, you can observe students interesting display where student voice out their opinions and belief or providing awareness to other. For example, on Spring 2010, a group of students laid down a gigantic looped pink ribbon as a sign that Breast Cancer Awareness Week was in commence.
Over time, they are other uses of the hills. You can see student lying down on the grass while reading their books during the spring semester or you can also see probably the biggest snowball fight ever at the end of fall semester.
4. UW Bridge (not an official name)
The UW Bridge is located on the foot of Bascom Hill. It immediately connects the Music Hall and Humanities Building. The bridge is easily one of the simplest yet primitively practical landmark among the ten. On the south side of the bridge engraved: "UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MADISON".
5. Kohl Center
Kohl Center is the home of Badger's basketball and hockey team.
Equipped with convertible space for basketball court and hockey rings, it is being use for Big Ten events or other championship matches. 2200 square-foot state-of-the-art locker room, lounge area, cardio room, video room and computer room had made basically Kohl Center the land of the athletes.
The awe-inspiring establishment is occasionally being use for other huge events such as freshmen welcoming speech, commencement day, speech giving ceremony and concerts.
6. The Bowl (not an official name)
The Bowl is a sculpture resided just outside of Ogg Hall. Titled as "The Basis", it was built by Dann Nardi on 2007 under Wisconsin's Percent For Art Program.
Nardi had built several different sculpture in other midwestern campuses including Illinois State University, University of Illinois, Eastern Illinois University, Northern Illinois University and Southern Illinois University.
This sculpture also serves as a very good landmark for giving. Personally, I used it as a landmark for giving out direction to people a number of time. :)
7. Southeastern Recreational Facilities (SERF)
SERF is one of the five recreational facilities available here in campus.
Located on the southeastern side of the campus, this 5-storied building is the most convenient location of the five for students and staff alike to get out and break some sweat - especially in the cold season of winter. Thirteen racquetball courts, four basketball courts, eight basketball half courts, two convertible volleyball courts, a mezzanine running track, a cardio room, a fitness studio, a weight exercise gym, two locker rooms and a 3x18 metres swimming pools are neatly packed in this building to bring out the best of every badgers.
Healthy body leads to a healthy mind.
8. Camp Randall Stadium
Camp Randall Stadium is the stronghold of the UW Badgers football team. Camp Randall Stadium is one of the host of the annual inter-college football league, the Big Ten Football Season.
One of the recent historic moments of Camp Randall Stadium is being the host of 2010 National Ice Hockey Championship match in February. An actually full-size ice rink was built on top of the green grass of the football field for that specific event. It was a marvelous feat. To top it of, both the women and the men teams won the championship. Yu-ra-rah-Wis-con-sin!
9. UW Sign (not an official name)
A stonewall in the middle of a roundabout on the east side of the campus. On it is written "UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN - MADISON".
10. State Street
Though State Street is located just off the UW campus, it plays a very important role in a Badger's (UW student) life.
Stretches from Park Street (near UW Bookstore) all the way up to the Capitol Square, State Street is also believe to be on the glacial line between the Capitol and Bascom Hill. State Street provides almost everything that a student needs: grocery, food, bank, bookstore, clothing stores and entertainments.
One unique characteristic of this single stretch of road is that it allows minimum number motor vehicle into it (only police, hospital, firefighter and other few authorized vehicles are allowed), making it a very pedestrian and cycler friendly road.
