• Take a dip somewhere in Mendota, if the temperature do not forbid

well, i studied hard. so now, i am going to play, hard.

Off the Edge

this whole week i felt like i were always on the edge. good thing i managed to keep my balance in-check and finished strong on this horrid marathon of tribulations. yerp, i had 7 weeks of continuous and merciless midterms. one right after another. that is like from week 3 of the semester up to week 10, just to give you a clearer picture. felt like getting smack down to the ground, being stood back up and get another good whack again. that was the routine for this part of the semester. horrible ain't it? whew. glad that's over.

by the way, just a remark, i am nice enough not to bitch about my horrible academic life to a roommate. why? because i know better. unlike some. shesh.

one thing i find it very paradoxical is that the things (homeworks, quizzes, midterms) that i put much work and effort into received fairly horrible grades while the one i felt really nonchalant about -- and sometimes just feel like getting it over and done with -- turned out to show brilliant result. i am dead puzzled. is it really antecedent-consequent or it is just some awful coincidence? well, i guess i that leave to be a mystery. after all, what's live without a little bit of wonder? :)

and one lesson i did learn from this chapter of my life (actually, they are two coherent things, but, well, you'll get the idea): "take things as they come, one at a time."

Yes, it is what you think it is. It is a day for Pi! Wuhoo!

Pi or approximately known as π = 3.14 is one of the natural existing constant of this world. Though mathematicians have yet posses a full understanding of this captivating entity, Pi had contributed much to the advancement of technology. Mathematicians all around the world work closely and are in love the constant Pi.

The first recorded discovery of Pi dated back in 2 000 BC where the mathematicians of Babylon and ancient Egypt were the firsts to be curious of the existence of Pi when they stumbled upon a seemingly coincidental ratio radius of circle to its circumference. The earliest approximations of Pi was 3.125 by the Babylonians and 256/81 by the Egyptians. Not bad for a first-timer, I would say. Not bad, not bad.

Though Pi was discovered a very long time ago, the famous symbol of π was just been introduced in recent centuries. It was a man who goes by the name of William Jone first wrote down π on a piece of paper in 1706. He was a pretty important mathematician of his time by the fact that he and Isaac Newton was close pals.

Yes, today, March 14th, is the Pi Day. A day was picked to commemorate the discover of Pi. A day put aside to spare a special time to appreciate the magnificent beauty of Pi. One of the cool thing about Pi Day (beside it the fact it sounded funny: pai-dei) is that it was picked on a witty reason. The kind of reason of which I call a 'mathematically-cute' reason. You'll see why. If you look back at the history, today never was stated as the exact day when Jone wrote down the symbol π or even the first Babylonian/Egyptian discover the ratio Pi. However, the reason lies in the date itself. If you live westward of Greenwich Meridian Timeline, you would probably have guessed it by now. March 14th was specifically picked because the first three digits of Pi are 3, 1 and 4. These three digits happen to be in the date 3/14! Tara~ You were surprised dincha? I know you did. Just admit it. LOL. By the way, yes, mathematicians indeed couldn't resist any chance to do this kind of 'mathematically-cute' things. Yerp, they really couldn't. Why you ask? Because they really couldn't!

There are a lot of approximations of Pi that we are able to observe in history books as it progressed through the many era of humanity. The one that might be most familiar to us today is π = 22/7. However, the exact value of Pi has yet to be discover. Mathematicians, scientists and computer programmers had been constantly working to generate the entire digits of Pi. The nearest approximation of Pi that I know was generated back in 2003 by a Japanese mathematician (regrettably, I didn't remember his exact name). He approximated Pi to around 1.24 trillion decimal place. Crazy fellow! Though many mathematicians believe that Pi is an irrational number, I beg to differ. I personally believe that Pi is just yet to be proven rational. Probably it can be express elegantly in some weird overlapping number system. Or some other whole new concept that is yet to be discover. Who knows? I don't. But I'm dead curious. Being a math geek, this is the kind of thing I put into my Things-I-Want-To-Know-Before-I-Die list. It comes and haunt me on my bed every time I'm trying to catch a good night sleep:

So mathematicians worldwide, start figuring some witty theory or crunching some algorithm into computers, because I want to know! XD

Mendota (cont'd)

If you guessed this is the continuation of the previous Mendota post, you are absolutely right! I am back with more stuff to do on the infamous Lake Mendota -- which I learn in my afroamer 156 class to be the death bed of Stax Records. Tragic story indeed. Nevertheless I discovered two new things to do on Mendota. That calls for a hooray. Hooray!


And because I am so awesome today, I also included a video bonus at the end this post. Enjoy.


8. Wind Sliding
I saw this dude with a red parachute when I was getting off bus 85. I was instantaneously awed by the sight. I hopped off the bus real quickly -- because I am afraid I might missed the guy -- and raced towards the lake. I run as hard as I could, like enjoying it. Felt like the kid I used to: the boy chasing after a news paper truck because his daddy ask to. you know, the one with the catchphrase "ol nius pepa, pepa lama, tautau toci, tautau tekyau". Anyway, there he was, the dude with the red parachute. He was sliding with the wind. It was awesome. I am not sure what he use as the glider, probably not a snowboard because it wouldn't work that well. Must be something like a round-shaped snow sledge. or even better, rheta's food tray! LOL.

9. Giant Name Carving
Another thing you would probably have thought of is carving your name. Everybody loves doing that. People carve their name everywhere. Toilet, historic statues, boulders on a mountain top, beach sand, bark of a tree even on other people's dusted car window. Everywhere. You can also find something like "I was here" or "Aku cinta Suzie" on a typical high school desk. Carve your name creatively. Feel free to quote, insert punch-line, draw cartoons or make silly remarks of yourself desk. Make it BIG. Because you can have all the space you want. You can even make it so big that it is visible on google earth. habadet! hahaha. Waterproof boots are highly advisable if you are doing it with your feet unless you like the aftertaste of frostbite. Youch!

University of Wisconsin a great school to be studying in. Being one of the university town in the States, there are a lot of things to love about it. The glorious Bascom Hill, the freaky friday nights on Langdon St., the exciting football seasons, the cool marching bands, the Unrefined & the Madhatters and not to forget, the ever so awesome Bucky Badger! (I bought the documentary!). But one awesome thing I really want to tell you guys today is Lake Mendota.

Lake Mendota is a very beautiful body of water. It stretches about 5 miles east-west and 4 miles north of the heart of Madison. The shore is a great place to be in. During fall, you can see people hanging around the lakeside picnicking, chilling out with friends, reading books, feeding wild duck, having lunch near Memorial Union or just kicking it on the shores of Mendota.

But at this time of the year, just what you can possibly do with the lake when it is frozen beyond the freezing point of water?

Actually, there are plenty!



1. Ice fishing
First off, for you fishing-lovers out there, one of the many things you can do would be to go ice fishing. Bring a giant drill, some good rods, baits, a chair and viola! you have your own hole to fish in. LOL. It is a good idea to bring a tent and a couple of friends with. Also, pack yourself some munchies for an ice picnic. You couldn't possibly stomach frozen sushi's for the whole day!

2. Snow Mobile

For those of you who love excitement and the sensation of adrenaline rushing through your veins, you might want to try driving a snow mobile around! Get one of this bad ass and go around traversing the rough terrain of the extreme climate.

This isn't exactly the snowmobile I am talking about. but hey, it is mobile and it works on snow! LOL. The one I saw was a lot faster and a lot meaner.

3. Ice Skiing
If snow mobile is too much of an excitement for you (or too much of a cost!), you could probably spare a few dollars and purchase your own set of skiing equipment. What you want to do with them? Put 'em on and glide through the frozen surface of Mendota! Yes, you can actually ski on a flat surface without any slope or hills like Lake Mendota. I saw a pakcik did it once but didn't got the chance to meet (and interview) him. I didn't manage to snap a picture of him too because he was too damn fast! Despite all odd, I did get a snapshot of his ski trail though. so, Yipee!

4. Ice Skating
An alternative to ice skiing would be ice skating. It works about the same. I didn't have any picture of people skating so I grabbed one from the internet.

5. Ice Cycling
I have never expect this one. I saw this dude on a bicycle cycling through Lake Mendota and it just blew my face right off. kapoww! Who would have thought you can cycle on ice! That is freaking awesome!

6. Snow Stroll
If you are not a thrill-junkie type of person, you can always take a nice stroll on the snow covered lake. The feeling of walking on a frozen lake felt almost exactly like walking on the side of the beach. The only different is there no body of water you can walk along by, you are walking on it! Stepping on thick snow felt just like stepping on sand, only a lot colder. Be sure to wear a water-proof boot and thick socks, and a water-proof jacket too because it is hard to resist making a snow angel when there is snow this thick!

7. Snow Chilling
If walking around is still too much for you, you can always just sit around in the snow. Yes, sit. you can do that at no cost at all. LOL. To make it even better, bring yourself a comfortably solid chair and have a bunch of friends to come with. Now, that is what I call 'chilling'. Wisconsin-style! U-rah-rah!

A week of F.U.N.

7-days test run starts now. im all psyche up!

this week totally gonna be one of the start of the best weeks of my life! yeah. gotta make it count. i am not gonna tell you readers out there what this post is all about. no, na-ah. wanna know? go figures. hahaha. besides, i like it this way. it is all ambiguous. it's like we're playing a game, you and me. huuuuu.t ambiguisity is a beautiful thing, no? ^_^

i am having problem with assignment 1. the game can't seem to reach level 100. on my first try, i ended at level 52. not because of my bomber died - that can't possibly be it because the game have unlimited continues - but it is because i have to shutdown my mac. i didn't shut it down for a week. oh you poor thing. you deserve a good rest. i'll make sure to shut you down more often from hereon.
alright, enough crap. funny thing did happen on my second try. i was at level 47, having my time of my life playing 'god' with all the sweet ass arsenal and powerups - all 10 bombs, 5 firepowers, trigger bomb, bomb-walker, wall-walk, and fire-immunity. you name it. felt sooooooooo good. it was awesome. but after i bombarded every single monsters on the level and cleared all the walls, i walked into the door as usually to clear the stage. surprisingly, the next thing i see is credit rolling, you know the one you typically see at the end of a game or movie. and i was like, whaaaaaaaattt? i haven't finished level 100 yet! darn you!

i tried every possible way to stop it but the game just end anyway. all my hard work collecting all the power-ups flashes before me. made the perfect bomber but it all went down the drain. watewes. i even picked up 3 of that bald japanese dude's head icon. which for your information each worth 1 trillion point. that made it 3 trillion! darn.

what can you do. that is what we gamers like to call virtual frustration. the game is virtual but the frustration is real alright. lol. anyway, i am gonna get to the bottom of this. i deduce one hypothesis. since the credit rolled at level 47 but i had once been to level 52, i think the ending is achievement-triggered. this means the game will end after i go into god mode. (ie by collecting all the power-ups)

if my hypothesis is tested true, i will still going to finish what i started. i will beat level 100 even if it means that i am restricted from getting into god mode. i shall beat it! watch out!


i'm talking about game. i must have nothing better to do. haha.
